Custom Sauna Design Done Right
Design is where a sauna is won or lost, and it happens long before anyone picks up a saw. We produce a 3D rendering of your room, work the bench geometry against your real ceiling height, size the heater to the cubic volume and the glass area, place the intake and exhaust where they will genuinely move air, and specify every material and accessory in writing. You get to see the room before you commit to it, and you can raise the bench, swap the wood or move the door while changing your mind is still free. Plenty of homeowners hire us for design alone and take the drawings to their own general contractor. We also design the builds we go on to construct. Either way the deliverable is identical: renderings, a dimensioned layout, a wood and hardware schedule, an electrical specification and a materials list that another contractor can price line by line. How We Work
One project manager carries the job from the opening consult through to the first ladleful of water on the stones.
1. Survey and brief
We measure the space, photograph it, check ceiling height, wall construction, existing venting routes and panel capacity, and talk through who is using the room, how often, and whether it needs to seat two people or six.
2. Render and revise
You get a 3D rendering and a dimensioned plan. We expect to revise it. Bench height, door swing, window position and wood choice are all still moving at this stage, and this is the cheap place to change them.
3. Specify and hand over
The final package covers wood species and quantities, heater make and output, electrical requirements, ventilation sizing and positions, glass and hardware, lighting and every accessory. It is written to be built from, by us or by anyone else.
When You Need Custom Sauna Design
A dedicated design phase pays for itself when:
- You have a contractor already. Plenty of remodels have a GC in place who has never built a sauna. Hand them a proper specification and they will build it correctly.
- The sauna is part of a larger project. A bathroom remodel, a garage conversion or a new build all need the sauna designed early, because the electrical and the venting have to be roughed in with everything else.
- You want to see it before you commit. A rendering settles arguments about bench layout and glass in an afternoon that would otherwise run for weeks.
- You are comparing quotes. Three builders pricing the same written specification give you three comparable numbers. Three builders each guessing at scope give you noise.
- The space is difficult. Low ceilings, sloped roofs, posts, tight side yards and coastal setback rules all need working out on paper before anyone orders material.
- You are choosing between heat types. Traditional, infrared, hybrid and steam make very different demands on the shell, the electrical and the plumbing. Design is where that decision belongs.

What Affects the Cost of Custom Sauna Design
Drawing work is priced as a fixed fee set by the scope. What sets it:
- Room complexity. A simple rectangle is a short job. A sloped-ceiling attic conversion or a hillside outdoor structure takes considerably more drawing.
- Number of revisions. Two rounds are included as standard. Clients who want to explore several genuinely different layouts take more.
- Depth of specification. A layout and heater spec is one level. A full construction-ready package with electrical, ventilation and a priced materials schedule is another.
- Site survey travel. Anywhere in Orange County is included. Further afield is quoted per visit.
- Permit drawings. Where the jurisdiction or the HOA wants submittable drawings, that is scoped as an add-on.
- Accessory and finish schedules. Salt walls, audio, lighting scenes and diffuser placement all add specification work if you want them designed rather than improvised.
Design fees are credited in full against the build when we go on to construct the project, including where the drawings turn into a Cedar Tub Install alongside the room.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hire you for design only and build it myself?
Yes, and a reasonable number of clients do exactly that. You get the renderings, the dimensioned layout, the wood and hardware schedule, the electrical specification and the ventilation plan, written so your own contractor can build from it. We are happy to answer questions from them during construction. The one thing we will not do is sign off on work we did not supervise, so the permits stay with whoever builds it.
How long does the design phase take?
Usually two to three weeks from the site survey to a final package, including two rounds of revisions. Simple rectangular rooms move faster. Outdoor structures on sloped lots, or anything needing HOA or coastal review, take longer, mostly because the approval bodies set the pace rather than the drawing does.
How do I choose the right sauna for a small backyard?
Start with the footprint you can actually give up permanently, then check the setbacks, because in a lot of Orange County neighborhoods the side and rear setback is what decides this rather than the size of the yard. A barrel sauna is the most efficient use of a small footprint, since the curved shape carries less air volume for the same seating. A compact cube cabin suits a rectangular corner better. If the yard is genuinely tiny, an indoor conversion often gives you a better room for the same money, because you are not paying for a roof, a foundation and a trenched circuit.
Do you design for other contractors?
Regularly. General contractors, architects and designers bring us in when a sauna appears in a remodel and nobody on the team has specified one before. We work to their drawing set and hand back a sauna package that drops into it, covering the shell build-up, the electrical load, the venting routes and the finish schedule.
What is included in the final design package?
A 3D rendering, a dimensioned plan and elevations, the wood species and quantities, the heater make and output with its electrical requirement, the ventilation sizes and positions, the glass and door hardware, the lighting plan and a full accessory schedule covering everything from the bucket and ladle to the controls, speakers and salt walls if you want them.
