Infrared Saunas Done Right
An infrared sauna warms your body directly with radiant emitters instead of heating the air around you. The room sits at 120 to 150 degrees rather than 190, sessions run longer and gentler, and the electrical load is far lighter, which is why infrared works in condos, upstairs bedrooms and the many older houses along this coast whose panels will not support a large heater without a service upgrade first. We fit far-infrared, near-infrared and full-spectrum systems, either as freestanding cabins or as emitters set into the walls of a cedar or hemlock room we build around them. Where clients want both experiences we build hybrid saunas: a traditional heater for real löyly at the weekend, infrared panels behind the backrests for a forty-minute session on a Tuesday. The build details still matter even at lower temperatures. Emitters have to face the body rather than the wall, controls need to be reachable from the bench rather than from the doorway, and the room still needs proper ventilation or it will smell within a year like any other sauna. How We Work
One project manager carries the job from the opening consult through to the first ladleful of water on the stones.
1. Match the system to the room
We look at the floor, the wall construction, the ceiling height and the circuit you have available, then recommend far-infrared, near-infrared or full-spectrum. Emitter count and placement are worked to the bench layout, not spread evenly around the walls.
2. Electrical and shell
Most infrared cabins run on a dedicated 20 or 30-amp circuit, which is far less disruptive than a traditional heater. We prep or build the shell, run the circuit under permit and set the low-voltage control and audio wiring before anything is closed in.
3. Assemble, calibrate and hand over
Cabin or custom room goes together, emitters are set and aimed, the controller is configured, and we run a full cycle to confirm surface temperatures and timings before showing you how to use it.
When You Need Infrared Saunas
Infrared is usually the better choice when:
- Your panel cannot carry a large heater. An infrared cabin on a 20-amp circuit avoids the subpanel or service upgrade that a 9kW traditional room would force, which on a lot of older Newport properties is the whole decision.
- You want longer, gentler sessions. 130 degrees for forty minutes suits a lot of people better than 195 for twelve, particularly if the room is going to get daily use.
- The room is upstairs or in a condo. Lighter loads, lower surface temperatures and much less moisture make infrared far easier to place inside an existing structure.
- You are on a short timeline. A cabin install is typically one to three days on site once the circuit is in, against weeks for a built traditional room.
- You want both kinds of heat. Hybrid saunas pair a traditional stove with infrared panels so the same room does two very different jobs.
- You may take it with you. A freestanding cabin can be dismantled and moved. A built-in traditional room stays with the house.

What Affects the Cost of Infrared Saunas
Infrared pricing generally sits below traditional because the electrical and the shell are both simpler. What moves it:
- Emitter technology. Far-infrared carbon panels are the value option. Near-infrared and full-spectrum systems cost more and do more.
- Cabin or built-in. A prefabricated cabin is the cheaper route. Panels built into a custom cedar room cost more and look like part of the house.
- Size and emitter count. Two-person cabins are the common starting point. Four-person rooms need more panels and more careful placement.
- Circuit work. A nearby outlet on a spare circuit is easy. A long run through finished walls is the usual cost surprise.
- Finish level. Chromotherapy lighting, glass fronts, audio, upgraded controls and bench upholstery are all optional.
- Hybrid conversion. Adding a traditional heater alongside the panels brings the traditional electrical and venting requirements back with it.
Infrared work is priced as one number and usually done inside one to three days on site, which makes it an easy thing to pair with a Cold Plunge Install on the same visit.

How do traditional saunas compare to modern infrared saunas?
A traditional sauna heats the air, typically to 175 to 200 degrees, and you can pour water on the stones for löyly. An infrared sauna heats your body directly with radiant panels while the air stays at 120 to 150, so you cannot make steam and the room feels completely different. Traditional gives the classic experience and the sharper heat; infrared gives longer, gentler sessions on a much lighter electrical load. Neither is objectively better. If you have used a sauna in Finland and want that again, build traditional. If you want something you will use daily without a service upgrade, infrared usually wins. If you cannot choose, a hybrid room does both.
What electrical does an infrared sauna need?
Most two-person cabins run on a dedicated 20-amp 120V circuit. Larger and full-spectrum units generally want 30 amps and sometimes 240V. Either way it is a fraction of what a traditional heater demands, which is exactly why infrared fits into houses where a traditional room would trigger a panel upgrade first. We still run the circuit under permit.
How long does an infrared sauna take to heat up?
Ten to fifteen minutes for the panels to reach output, though the point of infrared is that you do not wait for the air to catch up the way you do with a traditional room. Most people start the session and let it come up around them. Full-spectrum units with near-infrared emitters are effectively instant on those elements.
Can you build infrared into a proper cedar room instead of a cabin?
Yes, and it is the better-looking option by a distance. We frame and panel a custom cedar or hemlock room exactly as we would for a traditional build, then set the emitters into the walls and behind the backrests where they face the body. It costs more than a freestanding cabin and it reads as part of the house rather than a box in the corner.
Do infrared saunas still need ventilation?
Yes. There is less moisture than a traditional room, but there is still sweat, humidity and skin oil, and a sealed box with no air movement will smell within a year. We fit intake and exhaust to every infrared build, cabins included, even where the manufacturer treats it as optional.
