In Orange County most home sauna installations land in a wide band depending on room size, heater choice and how much of the space has to be rebuilt first. A small two-person conversion inside an already framed closet is the low end. A six-person cedar room with a premium heater, a new circuit and a full glass door is mid-range. Outdoor cabins with footings, a roof and a trenched electrical run sit at the top. Almost every electric sauna heater needs a dedicated 240V circuit with nothing else on it. A 4.5kW heater typically wants 30 amps, a 6kW heater 30 to 40, an 8 to 9kW heater 40 to 50, and a 10.5 to 12kW heater 60. Wire gauge is sized for the run length, and the heater is hard-wired rather than plugged in. We check panel capacity before anything else, because a lot of the older housing stock on the peninsula and in Corona del Mar is still on 100-amp service and needs a subpanel or a service upgrade before a large heater is realistic.

Not legally, and not safely. The dedicated 240V circuit needs an electrical permit in every Orange County jurisdiction we work in. Framing a new room or putting up an outdoor structure adds a building permit, a wood-fired heater adds combustion and venting review, and a lot inside the coastal zone can require a Coastal Development Permit on top. Unpermitted work becomes a problem at resale, during an insurance claim, or on the day something fails. We pull every permit as part of the install and run the inspections.

An indoor conversion in a space that is already framed usually runs one to two weeks on site once materials land, plus permit lead time. Converting a whole closet or a garage bay takes two to three weeks. Outdoor builds with footings take four to six. The heater and wood order is normally the longest lead item, so we place it the day the spec is signed rather than waiting for the permit to clear.

On the electric side, look for a well-insulated cabinet, high stone mass and a modern digital control with a scheduling timer, because holding heat efficiently matters far more than the nameplate rating. On the steam side, look for auto-drain and auto-flush generators, which use less water and last considerably longer given how hard the water is here.
