Cedar Tub Install Done Right
Cedar tubs are what hot tubs were before anybody moulded one out of acrylic. Clear western red cedar staves pulled tight under banding, cut deep enough that the water sits at your shoulders, warmed either electrically or by a stove built into the tub itself. We build traditional round and oval soaking tubs and Japanese tubs, the tall square ofuro designed for sitting upright rather than reclining, which use less water and fit spaces a conventional spa cannot get near. Every tub ships with a fitted insulated cedar tub cover, because an uncovered tub in an Orange County summer loses heat and collects debris fast, and the cover is what keeps the running cost sensible. They go indoors or out, set on a deck or sunk into one, and the pad, plumbing, circuit and approvals are ours to sort out. Bands are stainless as standard on anything within reach of the marine layer. Water treatment runs on ozone and UV rather than heavy chlorination, so the cedar goes on smelling like cedar instead of a public pool. How We Work
One project manager carries the job from the opening consult through to the first ladleful of water on the stones.
1. Size, site and base
We work out the tub size against who is using it and where it is going, then check the base. A full tub is heavy, so deck loading gets verified rather than assumed, and a ground-level install gets a proper pad with drainage away from it.
2. Build, band and plumb
Staves are milled and drawn tight with stainless bands, the heat source and filtration are plumbed, and the dedicated circuit is run under permit. Wood-fired units get their stove, flue and clearances detailed properly.
3. Fill, treat and cover
First fill and swell, ozone and UV sanitation set up, water chemistry explained, and a fitted insulated cover made to the tub rather than bought off a shelf. We walk you through the seasonal care before we leave.
When You Need Cedar Tub Install
A cedar tub is the right choice when:
- You want wood, not acrylic. A cedar tub looks and smells like a piece of joinery instead of a moulded shell, and it ages far better in a garden.
- Space is tight. A Japanese-style ofuro seats one or two upright in a fraction of the footprint of a conventional spa, which suits a courtyard or a small deck.
- You want to soak, not sit in jets. Deeper water, quieter operation and a genuinely different experience from a jetted spa.
- You are building a contrast circuit. A hot cedar tub next to a sauna and a cold plunge is the full sequence, and doing all three at once shares the deck, drainage and electrical.
- You want fewer chemicals. Ozone and UV sanitation keeps the chlorine down, which matters more with wood than it does with acrylic.
- You want it wood-fired. An integrated stove takes the tub off the electrical altogether and heats a surprisingly large volume, given the flue clearances are workable on your site.

What Affects the Cost of Cedar Tub Install
What a cedar tub costs comes down to its size, how it is heated and how much groundwork the site needs first:
- Size and shape. A two-person ofuro is the entry point. A six-person round soaking tub is a considerably larger object in every sense.
- Heat source. Electric heater and circulation, or an integrated wood-fired stove with a flue and clearances. Both are viable; they cost differently.
- Base and access. Deck reinforcement, a poured pad or a sunken installation are all real work, and access for delivery is worth checking early on a tight lot.
- Plumbing and electrical distance. Runs from the house to the far corner of the yard are the usual variable.
- Filtration and sanitation. Ozone and UV cost more than a chlorine float and are worth it on a wood tub.
- Cover and accessories. A fitted insulated cedar tub cover is included. Steps, rails, a hydraulic lift and seating are options.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much maintenance does a cedar hot tub need?
More attention than acrylic and less than people fear. Wood is a living material: it swells shut on first fill and can weep for a day or two, and it should not be left empty and drying out for long stretches in summer. Beyond that it is normal spa water care, made lighter by the ozone and UV system, plus keeping the cover on when it is not in use and checking the bands once a year. On a coastal property the bands are the thing to watch, which is why we fit stainless.
What is a Japanese ofuro and how is it different?
An ofuro is a deep, usually square tub designed for sitting upright with the water at shoulder height, rather than reclining the way a Western spa has you. It uses considerably less water for the same immersion, it fits into a footprint where a conventional spa simply will not go, and it is meant for soaking rather than for jets and conversation. We build them in western red cedar and in hinoki where a client wants the traditional wood.
Can a cedar tub go on my existing deck?
Often, but it has to be checked rather than assumed. A filled tub with people in it is a large point load, and most residential decks were not designed for it. We verify the framing and footing, and where it does not carry we either reinforce underneath or set the tub on its own pad next to the deck. It is a half-hour check that avoids a genuinely serious failure.
Do you make covers for tubs you did not build?
Yes. Fitted insulated cedar tub covers are one of our regular standalone jobs, and it is usually the single cheapest way to cut the running cost of an existing tub. We template the actual tub rather than working from a nominal size, because most tubs have moved a little from their catalogue dimensions by the time they are a few years old.
How long does a cedar tub last near the ocean?
Twenty years and beyond for the cedar itself if it is kept full, covered and reasonably treated. What fails first near the water is the hardware, which is why stainless bands and marine-grade fasteners matter here far more than they do inland. The other killer is leaving a tub empty and uncovered through a hot dry spell, which shrinks the staves and breaks the seal.
