How We Work
One project manager carries the job from the opening consult through to the first ladleful of water on the stones.
1. Site visit and heater sizing
We measure the space, open the panel to see what capacity is actually available, and calculate the heater output the room needs. A glass door, an uninsulated outside wall and a tall ceiling each add to what the heater has to overcome. Nothing is ordered until you hold a written specification for the heater, the timber, the venting and the circuit.
2. Permits, rough-in and wiring
We pull the electrical and building permits with the relevant Orange County jurisdiction, add a Coastal Development Permit application where the lot sits inside the coastal zone, frame or prep the space, run the dedicated circuit and install insulation, vapor barrier and vent openings. A licensed electrician makes the heater tie-in and the inspector signs off before any wall gets closed.
3. Finish, heater set and first burn
Tongue-and-groove paneling goes up, benches and backrests are built to your layout, the heater is mounted and the stones are set and rinsed. We run the first curing cycle, verify the room reaches temperature on schedule, then hand over the controls, the accessories and the care sheet.
When You Need Sauna Installation
A professional sauna installation is the right call when:
- You want a room at home that genuinely gets used. A room that heats in half an hour and holds temperature gets used four times a week. One that takes ninety minutes gets used twice and then stores the beach chairs.
- The heater needs a dedicated circuit. The bulk of heaters pull somewhere between 30 and 60 amps at 240V. That is a home run to the panel, a correctly sized breaker, and on a lot of older Newport and Corona del Mar cottages a hard look at whether the service can take it at all.
- You are converting an existing room. Closets, bathrooms, garages and spare bedrooms all need the framing, insulation and vapor barrier rebuilt from the studs out before they can hold sauna heat.
- You bought a sauna kit and want it fitted properly. We take delivery, prep the space, assemble to manufacturer spec and do the electrical under permit so the warranty survives contact with the install.
- Ventilation matters to you. Intake below the heater, exhaust on the opposite wall, both sized to the room. Without it the air goes stale, the top bench cooks and the floor never warms up.
- You are inside the coastal zone. Anything seaward of the coastal zone boundary can trigger a Coastal Development Permit on top of the usual approvals. It is not difficult, but it is not something to discover after the framing is up.

What Affects the Cost of Sauna Installation
Installation pricing moves with the size of the room, the heater and how much of the existing space has to be rebuilt. The main drivers:
- Room size. Four feet by five, seating two, is where this starts. A 6×7 four-person room is our most common build. Family-size and outdoor rooms scale up from there.
- Heater type and output. A 6kW electric sauna heater is the value option. A wood stove brings a flue and a combustion approval with it. Heaters with air circulation and humidity control occupy the upper end.
- Electrical distance and panel condition. A short run to a nearby subpanel is a modest line item. A long run through finished walls, or a service upgrade on a 100-amp panel, is not.
- Wood species. Western red cedar is the benchmark. A hemlock sauna comes in slightly under it. Thermo-aspen and abachi are the premium tier for benches that stay cool to the touch.
- How much rebuilding is needed. A framed, insulated space ready to receive paneling goes fast. A garage bay with bare studs, no insulation and no vapor barrier does not.
- Permits and coastal review. Electrical permits apply to every install. Framing changes and outdoor structures add a building permit, and coastal-zone lots may add a CDP. All quoted up front, never added later.

How much does a home sauna installation cost?
In Orange County most home sauna installations land in a wide band depending on room size, heater choice and how much of the space has to be rebuilt first. A small two-person conversion inside an already framed closet is the low end. A six-person cedar room with a premium heater, a new circuit and a full glass door is mid-range. Outdoor cabins with footings, a roof and a trenched electrical run sit at the top. We quote flat-rate after a site visit, with the heater, wiring, venting and permits all included, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
What are the electrical requirements for a sauna heater?
Almost every electric sauna heater needs a dedicated 240V circuit with nothing else on it. A 4.5kW heater typically wants 30 amps, a 6kW heater 30 to 40, an 8 to 9kW heater 40 to 50, and a 10.5 to 12kW heater 60. Wire gauge is sized for the run length, and the heater is hard-wired rather than plugged in. We check panel capacity before anything else, because a lot of the older housing stock on the peninsula and in Corona del Mar is still on 100-amp service and needs a subpanel or a service upgrade before a large heater is realistic.
Can I install a sauna without a permit?
Not legally, and not safely. The dedicated 240V circuit needs an electrical permit in every Orange County jurisdiction we work in. Framing a new room or putting up an outdoor structure adds a building permit, a wood-fired heater adds combustion and venting review, and a lot inside the coastal zone can require a Coastal Development Permit on top. Unpermitted work becomes a problem at resale, during an insurance claim, or on the day something fails. We pull every permit as part of the install and run the inspections.
How long does a sauna installation take?
An indoor conversion in a space that is already framed usually runs one to two weeks on site once materials land, plus permit lead time. Converting a whole closet or a garage bay takes two to three weeks. Outdoor builds with footings take four to six. The heater and wood order is normally the longest lead item, so we place it the day the spec is signed rather than waiting for the permit to clear.
Which brands provide eco-friendly sauna heaters and steam generators?
We install across all the major brands and can spec an efficient unit within any of them. On the electric side, look for a well-insulated cabinet, high stone mass and a modern digital control with a scheduling timer, because holding heat efficiently matters far more than the nameplate rating. On the steam side, look for auto-drain and auto-flush generators, which use less water and last considerably longer given how hard the water is here.
