Sauna Installation Done Right
An installation is a building job, not a delivery. We handle the framing, the closed-cell insulation, the foil vapor barrier, the intake and exhaust venting, the dedicated 240V circuit, the heater, the benches and the finish paneling. We fit electric sauna heaters, wood-fired stoves, infrared emitter panels and steam generators, each sized against the real cubic volume of the room rather than a number off a brochure chart. Most homeowners come to us with a closet, half a garage bay, a bathroom that is bigger than it needs to be or a stretch of side yard, and we turn it into a room that holds 180 to 200 degrees without punishing the power bill. Sauna installation services near the coast carry one extra consideration that inland builders can afford to ignore: every fastener, band, hinge and heater housing within reach of salt air has to be specified for it, or the room looks tired long before it is worn out. Every install is handed over with a labeled control, a written maintenance schedule and a walkthrough of the first heat cycle. How We Work
One project manager carries the job from the opening consult through to the first ladleful of water on the stones.
1. Site visit and heater sizing
We measure the space, open the panel to see what capacity is actually available, and calculate the heater output the room needs. A glass door, an uninsulated outside wall and a tall ceiling each add to what the heater has to overcome. Nothing is ordered until you hold a written specification for the heater, the timber, the venting and the circuit.
2. Permits, rough-in and wiring
Electrical and building permits go in with whichever Orange County jurisdiction applies, plus a Coastal Development Permit application where the lot sits inside the coastal zone. Then we frame or prepare the space, pull the dedicated circuit, and fit insulation, vapor barrier and vent openings. A licensed electrician makes the heater connection and the inspector signs it off before a single wall is closed.
3. Finish, heater set and first burn
Paneling goes on, benches and backrests are cut to the layout you approved, the heater is hung and the stones washed and packed. We take the room through its first curing burn, time how long it needs to reach temperature, and hand over controls, accessories and a care sheet before we leave.
When You Need Sauna Installation
Reasons to have the install done properly:
- You want a room at home that genuinely gets used. A room that heats in half an hour and holds temperature gets used four times a week. One that takes ninety minutes gets used twice and then stores the beach chairs.
- A dedicated circuit is involved. Most heaters draw 30 to 60 amps at 240V, which means a home run to the panel and a correctly sized breaker. On the older cottages around the peninsula and Corona del Mar it also means checking whether the service can carry it at all.
- An existing room is being converted. Closets, bathrooms, garage bays and spare bedrooms all have to come back to the studs so the framing, insulation and vapor barrier can be rebuilt to hold heat.
- A kit has arrived and you want it done right. We take the delivery, prepare the space, assemble to manufacturer specification and have the electrical permitted, so the warranty survives the installation.
- You care how the air moves. Intake under the heater, exhaust on the far wall, both sized to the room. Get it wrong and the air goes stale, the top bench cooks and the floor stays cold.
- You are inside the coastal zone. Anything seaward of the coastal zone boundary can trigger a Coastal Development Permit on top of the usual approvals. It is not difficult, but it is not something to discover after the framing is up.

What Affects the Cost of Sauna Installation
Three things set an installation price: how big the room is, which heater goes in it, and how much of the existing space has to come apart first. In detail:
- Room size. Four feet by five, seating two, is where this starts. A 6×7 four-person room is our most common build. Family-size and outdoor rooms scale up from there.
- Heater type and output. A 6kW electric sauna heater is the value option. A wood stove brings a flue and a combustion approval with it. Heaters with air circulation and humidity control occupy the upper end.
- Panel condition and cable distance. A short pull to a nearby subpanel barely registers. Fishing a long run through finished walls, or upgrading a 100-amp service first, certainly does.
- Species. Western red cedar is the reference point. Hemlock sits just under it. Thermo-aspen and abachi are the premium choice, worth it for benches you can sit on at full temperature.
- Demolition and rebuild. A space already framed, insulated and ready for paneling moves quickly. A garage bay with open studs, no insulation and no vapor barrier is most of a week before any cedar appears.
- Permits, and coastal review. An electrical permit applies every time. Framing changes and garden structures add a building permit, and a lot inside the coastal zone can add a CDP. All of it quoted at the start.
Installation is quoted flat-rate after the site visit. Heater, wiring, venting, permits and the first heat-up are inside that number, and the same basis applies to Commercial Saunas once the drawings are settled.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a home sauna installation cost?
Room size, heater class and how much building has to happen before the sauna goes in set the number. The lowest projects are two-person rooms dropped into a closet that is already framed and already has a spare circuit. Mid-range is a six-person cedar room with a good heater, a new 240V circuit and a glass door. The top is an outdoor cabin on footings with a roof and a trenched feed. After a site visit you get one flat price covering heater, wiring, venting and permits.
What are the electrical requirements for a sauna heater?
A dedicated 240V circuit, hard-wired, with nothing else sharing it. Rough sizing runs 30 amps for a 4.5kW heater, 30 to 40 for 6kW, 40 to 50 for 8 to 9kW, and 60 for 10.5 to 12kW, with conductor size then set by the length of the run. The first thing we look at is the panel, because much of the older stock on Balboa Peninsula and in Corona del Mar is still on a 100-amp service, and a large heater there means a subpanel or a service upgrade first.
Can I install a sauna without a permit?
No. The 240V circuit on its own requires an electrical permit in every Orange County jurisdiction we work in. Framing a new room or erecting an outdoor structure brings in a building permit, a wood-fired heater brings in combustion and venting review, and a parcel inside the coastal zone can also require a Coastal Development Permit. Skipping the paperwork surfaces later, at resale, in an insurance claim, or the day something goes wrong. Permits and inspections are inside our quoted price.
How long does a sauna installation take?
Count from the day the last carton lands, not from the day you sign. Taking a closet or a garage bay back to the studs and rebuilding puts it at two to three weeks. An outdoor cabin with footings and a roof is four to six. The critical path is almost always the heater and wood order, so we release it the day the specification is signed instead of waiting for plan check to clear.
Which brands provide eco-friendly sauna heaters and steam generators?
Efficiency comes from the room and the control far more than from the badge on the heater. In an electric heater we look for a well-insulated cabinet, plenty of stone mass to hold heat, and a control that can be scheduled so the room is not drawing power while it waits for you. In a steam generator, auto-drain and auto-flush are the features worth paying for on Orange County water, which is hard enough to scale a generator early.
