Steam Saunas Done Right
A steam sauna runs at around 110 to 120 degrees with the air fully saturated, which feels considerably hotter than a dry room even though the thermometer disagrees. The build is closer to bathroom construction than to carpentry: a sealed and waterproofed enclosure, a sloped ceiling so condensate runs to the walls instead of dripping on your head, a floor drain, and a steam generator sized to the enclosure volume and the surface materials inside it. We convert existing showers into steam showers and we build standalone steam rooms in tile, stone and acrylic. The generator lives in a nearby cabinet, attic or closet rather than in the room itself, and needs a water feed, a drain line and a dedicated circuit. Orange County water is hard enough that we specify auto-flush generators by default and set the descaling schedule at handover, because the single most common reason a steam generator dies early here is scale that nobody was told to manage. Clients frequently end up wanting both kinds of heat, in which case the wet room and the dry one share a wall, a drain and an electrician, and Barrel Saunas out in the yard get folded into the same trench. How We Work
One project manager carries the job from the opening consult through to the first ladleful of water on the stones.
1. Survey and generator sizing
We measure the enclosure and note every surface: tile, stone, glass and ceiling height all change the sizing. Natural stone and large glass panels both demand more output than a tiled box of the same volume.
2. Waterproof, slope and plumb
Full waterproofing to the ceiling, a ceiling sloped so condensate runs off to the sides, a floor drain, and the water feed and drain line run to the generator location. Where the generator sits in an attic or cabinet we add an overflow pan and a leak sensor.
3. Install, commission and set the schedule
Generator, steam head, controls and any aromatherapy pump go in, then we run it, check saturation and recovery, and set up the auto-flush and descaling schedule with you rather than leaving it in the manual.
When You Need Steam Saunas
A steam room or steam shower is the right call when:
- You prefer wet heat. Saturated air at 115 degrees is a completely different experience from dry heat at 190, and some people strongly prefer it.
- You already have the shower. Converting an existing enclosure is usually the cheapest route into steam, provided it can be sealed properly and has somewhere sensible for the generator.
- Space is tight. A steam shower does two jobs in one footprint, which matters in a condo or a peninsula house where there is no spare room to give up.
- You want it for sinuses and skin. This is the most common reason clients give us for choosing steam over a dry room.
- The room can drain properly. Steam needs a floor drain and a fall. Retrofitting one into a slab is the item that most often decides where the room can go.
- You want aromatherapy. Eucalyptus and oil injection are straightforward on a steam system and not really possible on a dry one.

What Affects the Cost of Steam Saunas
Steam pricing is driven by the enclosure and the plumbing far more than by the generator itself. What sets it:
- Conversion or new build. Sealing and upgrading an existing shower is the lower cost. Building a new enclosure with a new drain is a different project.
- Enclosure volume and materials. Natural stone and large glass panels both absorb heat and push the generator size up.
- Generator capacity and features. Auto-flush and auto-drain are worth paying for in hard water. Aromatherapy pumps, chromotherapy and audio are extras.
- Plumbing and drain work. A short run to accessible plumbing is inexpensive. Cutting a new drain into a slab is not.
- Generator location. A nearby closet is easy. An attic install adds an overflow pan, a leak sensor and access provisions.
- Waterproofing scope. Doing it properly to the ceiling is not optional, and on an older enclosure it usually means stripping back further than the client expected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you convert my existing shower into a steam shower?
Usually, yes. The enclosure has to be sealable to the ceiling, the ceiling needs a slope so condensate does not drip on you, the door needs a proper seal, and there has to be somewhere within a reasonable pipe run for the generator. Older enclosures often need the waterproofing redone rather than added to, which is the item that most often moves the quote, so we survey before pricing.
Where does the steam generator go?
In a cabinet, closet, attic or garage within about twenty-five feet of the steam head. Not in the room. It needs a water supply, a drain, a dedicated electrical circuit and access for servicing. Where the only viable spot is an attic we add an overflow pan and a leak sensor as a matter of course, because a generator failure over a finished ceiling is an expensive way to learn that lesson.
How much maintenance does a steam generator need?
Given the water hardness here, more than the manual implies. An auto-flush model handles most of it by dumping the tank after each session, which is why we specify them by default. Beyond that it is periodic descaling, an annual check on the element and the pressure relief, and keeping the drain line clear. We set the schedule with you at handover and can service it on a plan.
Is a steam room hotter than a sauna?
It feels hotter and measures cooler. A steam room runs at 110 to 120 degrees but at full saturation, so sweat cannot evaporate and your body loses its main cooling route. A dry sauna at 190 has almost no humidity, so evaporation keeps working. Most people find they can stay in a dry sauna longer despite the much higher air temperature.
Can I have both a sauna and a steam shower?
Frequently the best answer, and we build the pair together often. They use the same wet zone, the same drainage and often the same electrical trench, so doing both at once costs meaningfully less than doing them two years apart. It also lets each room be genuinely itself rather than compromising one to do both jobs.
