Custom Saunas Done Right
A custom sauna is built around your room instead of forcing your room to accept a rectangle. As a custom sauna builder we start with whatever you actually have — the sloped ceiling, the structural post in the wrong place, the awkward alcove under the stair, the 30-foot-wide peninsula lot with four feet of side yard — and design a hot room that uses every inch of it. You choose the wood species, the bench geometry, the door and glass, the lighting and the heater. It is built on site out of solid tongue-and-groove stock: a cedar sauna for the classic aroma and colour, a hemlock sauna for a paler and more neutral room, Nordic spruce for a traditional Finnish look, or thermo-aspen and abachi for benches that stay cool against bare skin. Nothing is a catalog part number. Bench height matches the people who will sit on them, the door swings the way the room wants it to, and the lighting is placed to rake across the grain rather than glare off it. How We Work
One project manager carries the job from the opening consult through to the first ladleful of water on the stones.
1. Measure, listen and draw
We measure the space properly, ask how many people will use it and how often, and produce a 3D rendering with a dimensioned layout. You see the room and can move a bench, change a wood or reposition the door while it still costs nothing to change.
2. Specify every material in writing
Wood species and grade, heater make and output, glass and door hardware, lighting, controls, ventilation sizing and every accessory, all listed before we order. On coastal lots that specification includes the corrosion rating of anything metal.
3. Build, commission and hand over
Framing, insulation, vapor barrier, venting, electrical, paneling, benches and finish carpentry, all by our own crew. We run the curing cycle, confirm the room performs to the spec you signed, and walk you through it.
When You Need Custom Saunas
Going custom instead of buying a kit makes sense when:
- The space is not a clean rectangle. Sloped ceilings, posts, low headroom under a stair and narrow side yards are exactly where kits stop working and a custom build starts paying for itself.
- You care what it looks like. Wood species, grain direction, bench profile, backrest detail, door hardware and lighting are all yours to choose rather than whatever the manufacturer shipped.
- The bench geometry has to fit real people. Height above the floor, depth, the gap to the ceiling and the step-up all change how the room feels, and none of it is adjustable once a kit is assembled.
- You want features a kit will not carry. Salt walls, backlit slat panels, integrated speakers, an oil diffuser, a fiber-optic star ceiling or a full-glass front are custom work by definition.
- Access is genuinely difficult. A room built on site goes in as lumber. A prefabricated cabin has to physically reach the site, which rules it out on a lot of alley-access and hillside properties around here.
- You are matching an existing interior. Aligning a sauna with the cabinetry, tile or millwork already in the house is something only a built-on-site room can do.

What Affects the Cost of Custom Saunas
Custom pricing tracks size, materials and complexity more than anything else. What moves the number:
- Footprint and ceiling height. Cubic volume drives both the material list and the heater, and a tall room costs more to heat forever, not just to build.
- Wood species and grade. Clear-grade western red cedar is the benchmark. Knotty cedar and hemlock come in under it. Thermo-aspen, abachi and alder benches sit above it.
- Glass. A full-glass front or a large picture window changes the heater sizing as well as the price, because glass is where the heat leaves.
- Bench and backrest complexity. A straight two-tier bench is simple. Wrap-around L and U layouts with floating backrests and hidden lighting are considerably more carpentry.
- Structural work. Moving a wall, cutting in a window, reframing a ceiling or building a platform to level a sloped floor are all quoted separately and up front.
- Feature detailing. Salt walls, slat panels, star ceilings, integrated audio and custom door hardware are optional line items you can add or drop at design stage.

What are the benefits of hiring a professional sauna builder?
The parts of a sauna that determine whether it works are the parts you never see again after handover: the continuity of the vapor barrier, the position and size of the intake and exhaust, the heater sized against actual cubic volume and glass area, and the bench height relative to the ceiling. A professional sauna builder gets those right by default and carries the licence and insurance to pull the permits. The visible carpentry is the easy half. Most of the failed rooms we are called out to look at were finished beautifully and built wrong behind the paneling.

The wood and the glass are where budgets move most, because a clear-grade cedar room with a full-glass front can be close to double a knotty-cedar room with a solid door of the same dimensions. Structural work — moving a wall, levelling a floor, cutting in a window — is the other big variable, which is why we scope it before quoting rather than after.
How much does it cost to hire a professional sauna builder in the US?
Nationally, professional installation typically runs somewhere between a third and half of the total project cost, with materials and the heater making up the rest. Coastal Southern California sits above the national average on labour and below it on heating season, and permit costs vary a lot between jurisdictions here. Rather than quote a national range at you, we do a site visit and give you one flat-rate number for design, materials, labour, electrical and permits, so there is nothing to reconcile later.
Which wood is best for a custom sauna?
Western red cedar is the default for good reasons: it is stable, it resists rot, it smells like a sauna should and it does not get too hot to touch. Hemlock is paler, more neutral and slightly cheaper, and it suits a modern interior. Nordic spruce is the traditional Finnish choice. For benches specifically, thermo-aspen and abachi stay noticeably cooler against skin, which matters more than most people expect on the top bench. What never belongs in a hot room is anything chemically treated, varnished or sealed.
Can you build a sauna into an awkward or very small space?
Usually, yes, and it is a lot of what we do here. Two-person rooms fit into a deep closet, the end of a bathroom or a corner of a garage. Sloped ceilings work as long as the bench is positioned under the high side. Posts can be panelled into the design. The real limits are ceiling height under about six and a half feet, which makes the upper bench uncomfortable, and electrical capacity, which is the more common blocker of the two.
