Outdoor Saunas Done Right
A detached room changes the ritual. You get a porch to change on, a cold shower, somewhere to sit with the harbor air on you afterwards, and none of it has to fit around the rest of the house. What it costs you is that we are no longer fitting out a room, we are putting up a small building: footings or a slab, framing, roof, cladding and flashing, weather sealing against driven salt spray, and a power run buried in conduit rather than trailed across the lawn. The paperwork is heavier too. A building permit with setback checks, an HOA architectural submittal on most of Newport Coast and Lido Isle, and on lots inside the coastal zone a Coastal Development Permit, which is a formality when it goes in early and a genuine problem when somebody discovers it after the slab is poured. Poolside builds add their own questions about deck structure, drainage and keeping chlorinated splash off cedar. We carry all of it, jurisdiction included. The interior work is the same craft as our indoor installations, and on larger properties the specification usually ends up closer to what we hold commercial rooms to.

How We Work
One project manager carries the job from the opening consult through to the first ladleful of water on the stones.
1. Siting, setbacks and approvals
We site the building against the setbacks, the fall of the land, the prevailing wind and where the power can come from, then handle the building permit, the HOA architectural submission and a Coastal Development Permit application where the lot needs one.
2. Foundation, structure and weather envelope
Footings or a slab, framing, roofing, cladding and flashing. Every exterior penetration is sealed and every fastener within reach of salt air is stainless or marine-grade, because on this coast that is what decides how it looks in year five.
3. Power, interior and commissioning
Trenched circuit in conduit, or a flue with clearances and a spark arrestor for wood-fired. Then insulation, vapor barrier, venting, paneling, benches, heater and stones, the curing burn and the handover.
When You Need Outdoor Saunas
Reasons to put the room outside:
- You want the whole ritual. Hot room, cold shower, plunge and somewhere to sit outside between rounds is a different thing entirely from a cabin in a spare bedroom.
- There is no space inside. Plenty of houses here have a yard or a deck and not one spare interior room.
- You want a wood-fired sauna. Outdoors is where a wood stove is genuinely practical, with the flue clearances and combustion permit that come with it.
- You are building around a pool. A pool sauna next to an existing plunge or pool deck is the most natural contrast setup there is, and the deck and drainage are already halfway done.
- You want it to seat six or more. Group-size rooms are usually easier to build outdoors than to carve out of a house.
- The view is worth a window. On a canyon or hillside lot a picture window pointed the right way changes the whole room.
Photograph the yard and the panel location and we will scope footings, the buried run and the permits from that. Already bought the building? Then it is a kit assembly, and considerably cheaper. Call: (949) 628-5172

What Affects the Cost of Outdoor Saunas
Outside costs more because the job is a small building rather than a fit-out. What drives it:
- Foundation. Pavers on level ground are modest. Footings and a stepped platform on a Laguna or Newport Coast slope are a real line item.
- Size and roof. A four-person cabin with a shed roof against an eight-person gabled building with a changing porch is a wide span.
- Electrical trenching. Distance from the panel to the back of the lot, and whether the run crosses hardscape, is the classic cost surprise.
- Cladding and weather detailing. Coastal exposure means better flashing, better sealing and stainless hardware throughout.
- Permits and reviews. Building permit, plus HOA architectural review in the planned communities, plus a Coastal Development Permit on coastal-zone lots.
- Extras. Changing porch, outdoor shower, decking, lighting and a cold plunge alongside are all separately quotable.
One fixed price once the site has been surveyed, taking in the footings, the building itself, the heater, the trenched power run and all approvals. Panels rather than a stove put the same cabin into Infrared Saunas territory, which lightens the electrical considerably.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have a sauna in my backyard?
Almost certainly, and it is one of our most common builds. What decides the details is the setbacks, the lot coverage limit, whether your HOA has architectural review, and whether the property sits inside the coastal zone. None of those is usually a blocker, but all four are worth checking before you fall in love with a position. We do that check as part of the site visit, at no cost, and tell you plainly if the spot you had in mind will not fly.
What permits are required for constructing an outdoor sauna?
A building permit for the structure and an electrical permit for the circuit, in every Orange County jurisdiction we work in. A wood-fired heater adds combustion and venting review. Properties inside the coastal zone can need a Coastal Development Permit from the city or the Coastal Commission depending on the location, and the planned communities usually add an HOA architectural review that runs on its own timetable. We handle all of it, and we build the approval lead time into the schedule rather than discovering it later.
How close to the property line can an outdoor sauna go?
It depends on your zoning and the jurisdiction, and it varies meaningfully between Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine and the county areas. Side and rear setbacks are the ones that matter, and detached accessory structures sometimes get more latitude than habitable space. We pull the zoning for your parcel at the survey rather than guessing, because moving a building three feet after the footings are poured is not a small correction.
Will an outdoor sauna survive the salt air?
If it is specified for it, yes, for decades. If it is not, it will look tired in three years. The failure points are always the metal and the penetrations: plated screws, mild-steel bands, unsealed flue and vent openings, and unflashed roof junctions. We use stainless and marine-grade fasteners, seal every penetration and detail the flashing properly on every build within reach of the water, which is most of them here.
Can you build a sauna next to my pool?
Yes, and it is a natural pairing since you already have the deck, the drainage and often a plunge. The things we watch are chlorinated splash on cedar, which we handle with placement and sealing at the base, deck loading if the sauna is going on an existing structure, and the electrical, which has to respect the pool bonding and clearance rules. All of that is straightforward when it is designed in from the start.
